About the House

The historic Bates-Hendricks House is named after former owners Hervey Bates, a prominent banker, and Thomas A. Hendricks, an Indiana Governor and United States Vice President, and is the namesake of the Bates-Hendricks Neighborhood.

It is one of the oldest and most notable historic houses in Indianapolis and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house was originally built in the early 1820's, with two separate additions being constructed in the 1850's.
